Checked October 5, 2026. Dots launched a week ago, and OpenAI has said limits and pricing will change after the first month. Some of OpenAI's own pages couldn't be loaded, so a few details come from launch coverage and are marked. Octopus22's details come from our own product.
Terms used: single sign-on (SSO) lets staff log in with their company account, and SAML and OIDC are two kinds of it. SCIM adds and removes users automatically from your company directory. MCP is a standard way to plug other tools into an AI.

What each one is
Dots are "always-on agents that keep work moving across your tools and projects" (OpenAI docs). OpenAI launched them at DevDay on September 29, 2026, alongside ChatGPT Space, a shared workspace (VentureBeat). Each Dot runs on GPT-6 Astra, has its own cloud computer, and keeps working after you close the chat.
Octopus22 lets a company hire AI teammates with names and roles that work in shared conversations with its people, share one Company Brain memory, and each work on their own screen of a cloud computer.
The biggest difference: personal agent or shared teammates
A Dot is personal (OpenAI docs):
- You get one, and by default only you can direct it.
- In Slack it can talk to others if you tell it to, and checks with you before sharing anything private.
- Colleagues can work with it through ChatGPT Space pages.
- Company-owned "specialist Dots" exist only as an enterprise pilot.
Octopus22 teammates belong to the team:
- A member can share a teammate with everyone, and each colleague gets a private chat with it.
- Several teammates work together in shared conversations with people.
- A shared teammate acts with its owner's connected accounts. Colleagues wait on the owner for every approval, and can open and drive its screen, which is signed in as the owner.
Where they work
Dots live in ChatGPT on desktop, web and mobile, with voice calls in the app, and in Slack. OpenAI lists Microsoft Teams as available, though some reports describe it as an invite-only alpha. Texting is "coming soon".
Octopus22 is a web app, with no Slack, Teams or mobile app presence.
If you live in ChatGPT, Dots fit naturally.
Capabilities
Dots:
- Computer: each Dot has its own cloud computer and browser, and can also use your computer while the ChatGPT app is open.
- Apps: connects to 4,000+ apps (SiliconANGLE).
- Work: starts Codex and Work tasks and runs read-only proactive research.
Octopus22:
- Computer: each teammate has its own screen with a browser that stays signed in, which you can watch and take over.
- Apps: 500+ apps plus custom MCP.
- Helpers: teammates can run helpers in parallel and hire new teammates.
Dots have a much bigger app catalog.
Memory
Dots remember through three layers: the conversation, your ChatGPT memory and the Dot's own notes. Reports say you can't edit or delete individual memories; deleting the Dot clears them (Flavio Copes).
Octopus22's Company Brain learns facts from your conversations, keeps their history, and lets anyone correct or retract a company fact. Facts are company-wide by default, even ones learned in a private chat. Only personal preferences stay private.
Approvals and control
Dots have four levels of custom rules: act without asking, act when you say so, ask first, or hand off to you. An auto-review checks consequential actions, and an activity view and pause button let you step in (OpenAI docs). Sensitive steps like changing a password stay with you.
Octopus22: Before a teammate sends, pays, deletes or cancels something through a connected app or in its browser, an AI check pauses it until the teammate's owner approves. Reading runs freely. Its own tools, like hiring a teammate or scheduling, and commands it runs on its own computer aren't checked. Owners can set each tool to "always allow", "always ask" or off.
Security and compliance
| OpenAI Dots | Octopus22 | |
|---|---|---|
| SOC 2 | Type 2 for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise (not Dot-specific) | None yet |
| Data residency | Reported as not supported for Dots | Computers in Frankfurt; app, data and files in Singapore |
| Admin controls | Per-feature toggles; Enterprise in beta | Ultra plan: OIDC SSO, SCIM, audit log |
| Training on your data | Off by default for Business and Enterprise | Not used for training; model providers commit not to train on it |
The SOC 2 and data residency details come from secondary sources, because OpenAI's trust and help pages couldn't be loaded.
Pricing and real monthly cost
Dots come included with (OpenAI docs):
- ChatGPT Pro: $100, $200 or $500 a month, adults only, not sold in the EU, UK or Switzerland.
- Business Premium: $125 a month per seat, or $100 billed annually (The Decoder).
- Enterprise: in beta.
Chatting with your Dot doesn't count against ChatGPT limits, but tasks it starts in Codex or Work do. Extra Dots and more capacity will cost extra later, at prices not yet published.
Octopus22 is $49, $99 or $199 per member a month, with 40,000, 80,000 or 160,000 credits per member, and work pauses when credits run out unless you turn on auto-reload.
Estimated monthly cost:
| Team | OpenAI Dots | Octopus22 (Pro) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 person | $100 (Pro) | $49 |
| 5 people | $500 to $625 (Business Premium) | $245 |
| 20 people | $2,000 to $2,500 (all Premium, one Dot each) | $980, or $3,980 on Ultra with single sign-on |
ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium include much more than Dots: the whole ChatGPT product, Codex and more. Compare them as a bundle, not just as an agent.

- Connections: reconnect your apps.
- Your Dot: deleting it erases its conversations, memories and schedules, and can't be undone.
